Java fern is a tough-as-nails dark green leafy plant. It is well suited for almost any aquarium, due to its low light requirements and tough leaves that resist grazing by many fish.
It does well in most light intensities, pH, and hardness. It grows from a rhizome, or root stem, which should not buried. Plants may be allowed to float but look best when attached to rocks or wood. new plants develop on the ends of the leaves and can be removed and attached elsewhere to propagate.
Java fern is a fairly slow growing plant, so some precautions should be taken to prevent algae and mulm from coating the leaves. Snails, shrimp, Plecos, and other algae grazing critters can help a lot. Leaves can grow over 8 inches long in a mature plant; but due to its slow growth, with occasional trimming it can be used almost anywhere in the aquascape.
As a rhizome plant, it will acquire nutrients from the water column. Additional fertilizer is seldom necessary.
Sold per plant. One unattached plant will fill about 4 square inches of tank space but should be attached (glued or tied) to a rock or wood feature in the aquascape upon receipt.
