Hornwort, also known as coon tail, is an extremely hardy and easy to grow floating plant.
It does well in almost all light intensities, pH, and hardness. It is an excellent plant for beginners, low tech systems, and breeding tanks. It typically grows free floating and will not root in the substrate, but it can be anchored with plant weights if desired. Under bright light it can develop darker green or crimson coloration. It can be propagated easily by dividing the stems.
Hornwort is excellent in breeding and shrimp tanks; Its dense clusters of fine leaves provide good hiding for fry and babies and the fast growth does well in reducing nitrates.
It is a very fast-growing plant even in moderate to low light; if nutrient levels get too low it may begin to die back. Additional fertilizer may be necessary in low nutrient tanks.
The stems of this plant can be delicate, and it may shed leaves after major changes or shipping. As a rare purely aquatic plant, it must be kept submerged. In air it is not able to support itself and will die even if kept wet.
Sold in groups of about 2 feet of stems, bagged in water.
