Semi-Aquatic Plants

Semi-Aquatic plants do not go underwater in your aquarium, but rather grow out of the tank with "wet feet", or their roots in the water.

These plants are a great addition to aquariums where standard aquatic plants do not work well, such as cichlid tanks or bare breeding tanks. They also can provide a whole new dimension of beauty growing up above the aquarium.
A few inches of the stem or the roots should be submerged either behind a Matten filter, in a box filter, or otherwise in the tank water. From there they grow like a houseplant that you never have to water or fertilize, removing nitrates and excess nutrients from the water and helping keep your aquarium healthy.

Pothos ( Epipremnum aureum )

Pothos is a common houseplant that makes a fantastic addition to the aquarium. It grows tough vines with large heart shaped leaves. It does require light when growing out of your aquarium, but in a well-lit room will not require any bright or additional lighting.

It is a fast-growing vine, which does a great job of reducing nitrates in your tank. Additional fertilizer is not usually necessary.
This plant can grow very long. With some support it can be trained to grow up the wall behind your aquarium or up to the celling and all around the room. Cuttings can be placed with the cut end in the water to root and start new vines.

Sold in rooted cuttings about 1.5 to 2 ft long.

BloodLeaf ( Iresine herbstii )

The gorgeous plant has thick red stems and four inch oval purple-red leaves. It grows in more of a shrub like manner, to a height of 1 to 2 feet above the aquarium.

As can be expected of a red plant it does prefer higher light, and should be lit from above for 10-12 hours per day. The stems are moderately fragile, and care should be taken to not accidentally break them. Otherwise, it is low maintenance and can be propagated from trimmings like Pothos

Sold in pairs of rooted cuttings about 6 to 8 inches long.

Wandering "dude" ( Tradescantia zebrina )

In a garden this is a fast growing ground cover, but on top of your aquarium it provides a low lying bushy pop of color and contrast. Wandering "dude" has bright purple stems and narrow purple leaves with white stripes. It does not grow quite as fast as previous entries on this list, so while it does benefit the aquarium it should mainly be considered for aesthetic use.

bright light is not required, but it does benefit from additional lighting. The stems are fragile, and extra care should be taken to not accidentally break them. Otherwise, it is low maintenance and can be propagated from trimmings.

Sold in pairs of rooted cuttings about 6 to 8 inches long.

Bacopa ( Bacopa monnieri )

also known as Water Hyssop, Bacopa monnieri is a versatile and fast-growing stem plant native to most of the southern US. It is known for producing small delicate white flowers all along its stem when growing in air.
Bacopa is fast growing and will branch and cover the top of the aquarium and hang down the sides, cleaning the water as it grows. Bright light is not required but will speed growth. Frequent trimming may be required, and it may be propagated by placing the cut ends of the trimmings in water.

Unlike other entries on this page, Bacopa monnieri may be grown fully submersed, or rooted in the substrate and then allowed to grow up and out of the tank.

Sold in bunches of 4 to 6 stems.
